Ghanaian born fashion designer Mimi Plange remixes African cultural traditions in a refreshing and modern way.

Mimi Plange is a Ghanian-born fashion designer raised in the United States after her parents moved to the states when she was 5 years old. She's captured the attention of the fashion elite and she captured our attention for her boldness, vibrant colors and connection and influence to African traditions. We are proud to present this post in a move to explore more diversity in design.

She launched her own ready-to-wear label in 2010, after a decade working in the New York fashion industry she's even collaborated with French designer furniture brand Roche Bobois. Mimi holds a degree in Architecture from the University of California at Berkeley but it was fashion that really drove her passion so she then obtained a degree in fashion from the San Francisco Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising. She has received acclaim for her work in the fashion industry, winning such accolades as International Emerging Designer of the Year in 2011 at the Mercedes-Benz Africa Fashion Week held in South Africa. The year after, she was named Designer of the Year. She also won Mayor Bloomberg’s Design Entrepreneurs Award in New York in 2012.

Guided by the principle she refers to as “The Democratization of Luxury”, Mimi Plange creates clothes that are very much inspired by the modern American luxury sportswear tradition, with an infusion of dark romance and aimed at the new, international and democratically-minded consumer. Africa remains a limitless font of inspiration for the Ghanaian-born designer, who constantly seeks out the unusual and the lyrical found in African traditions, landscapes, and lore, and reinterprets these themes in a refreshingly modern way.

Here the ribbing in Mimi's work comes in the form of scarifications found in African cultures.

It’s about establishing a new point of view in luxury by capturing the creativity of ancient African civilizations,” says Plange.

Mimi's collaboration with Roche Bobois began a year prior when they teamed up to design custom upholstery fabric for the iconic Mah Jong modular sofa. The sofa was first introduced in 1970 and designed by Hans Hopfer.  The project was presented in September 2016 in Atlanta for a charity event titled "Utopia" The proceeds benefitted Horizons Atlanta an organization that host summer enrichment programs for students.
